Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After any serious accident, families want to be sure they're getting the whole story. They deserve to know that they are, but that's easier said than done. That's why I've found it helpful to keep key questions in mind when speaking with authorities who are handling the crash.
Did investigators utilize the time, equipment, and experience necessary to fully reconstruct what happened? Law enforcement agencies handle a wide range of responsibilities, and not all have the resources to conduct detailed crash investigations. If they moved on quickly or lacked the proper tools, important details may have been missed.
Have they considered whether a mechanical failure or vehicle defect contributed to the crash? A sudden loss of control could point to issues with steering, brakes, or tires. Additionally, seatbelts or airbags that failed to protect the driver might have made the accident more severe. If authorities didn't inspect the vehicle for defects, critical evidence could be lost.
Did they collect and preserve all available electronic evidence? The Honda may have stored data on speed, braking, and steering before the crash. Investigators should also review GPS records, cellphone activity, and any available traffic or security camera footage to get a clearer picture of the events. If authorities don’t secure this information quickly, it may be lost.
If authorities can provide clear and satisfactory answers, it can reassure families that authorities are likely taking the investigations seriously. However, if the answers are lacking, that can be a family's sign that a second set of eyes may need to look things over and make sure nothing important slipped through the cracks.
