Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After a crash like this, may be left with more questions than answers. Even victims and families can find themselves left out in the wind if authorities move on too soon from an investigation. This is why it can be crucial to consider a few key questions early on.
First, did investigators have the right tools and enough time to thoroughly analyze the scene? On a two-lane rural highway like this, visibility, road alignment, and shoulder conditions all matter. Was there a sharp curve? Did either vehicle drift, or was one attempting a turn? Without a complete scene review—including skid marks, debris patterns, and sight lines—key facts can be missed.
Next, has anyone considered whether a vehicle defect could have played a role? A failure in steering, brakes, or tires can result in sudden lane departure. These issues often go undetected unless both vehicles are thoroughly inspected soon after the crash.
Finally, has all relevant electronic data been collected? This includes vehicle data such as speed and braking, as well as GPS information, cell phone records, and any available footage from nearby properties. These sources can reveal whether there was a distraction, mechanical issue, or evasive action that wasn't obvious from the crash scene alone.
When the cause of a head-on collision is unknown, it’s essential to ask these deeper questions early—before critical evidence is lost.
Key Takeaways:
- Two-lane highway crashes require close analysis of road layout and driver actions.
- Vehicle defects must be ruled out through prompt, detailed inspections.
- Electronic data—vehicle systems, GPS, phones, and camera footage—can clarify what happened.
- Early, thorough investigation is key to uncovering the full cause of the crash.
