Commentary
One of the inherent challenges with any fatal single-vehicle accident is that the victim isn't around to tell their side of the story. That makes it all the more crucial for the crash to be in the hands of experienced, well-equipped investigators who can help ensure the evidence speaks on the victim's behalf. Unfortunately, authorities are not always up to this task.
I've been handling serious car accident cases for over thirty years now. The reality is not all departments treat accident reconstruction as a high priority. That means officers may not receive training to investigate complex possible factors, such as vehicle defects, road design flaws, tire failure, drivers over-served by a bar, or other extenuating circumstances. Other times, officers don't have access to proper tools, so they aren't able to look into these complex possible factors even when they're motivated and skilled enough to do so.
That's why it can be helpful for families affected by a serious accident to consider following up with the authorities rather than assuming they're going to get answers on their own. Sometimes, authorities are able to provide clear insight on their findings, and that can reassure families that authorities are actually giving the crash the attention it deserves. However, they may instead find that authorities aren't able to adequately address their concerns. That's when it may be time for a second set of eyes to look things over and see if authorities are missing something important.
