Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When several vehicles collide on a busy interstate, the first reports often reduce it to “a crash involving multiple cars.” While that may describe the result, it doesn’t explain what led to the chain of events or why certain people were more seriously hurt than others.
Did investigators reconstruct the accident thoroughly?
Multi-vehicle crashes can be some of the most complex to untangle. A proper review would mean mapping the roadway, examining skid marks, and analyzing vehicle damage to confirm which car struck first and how the chain reaction unfolded. Without that, the official account may only capture fragments of the truth.
Could a mechanical or safety issue have played a role?
It’s natural to assume these wrecks are about traffic congestion and driver behavior, but a sudden brake failure, steering malfunction, or tire blowout could just as easily set everything in motion. On top of that, airbags or seatbelts not working properly could explain why one driver suffered severe injuries while another did not.
Has the electronic evidence been preserved?
The Land Rover and Ford both likely contain Engine Control Modules (ECMs) that can show speed, braking, and steering input in the moments before impact. With four vehicles involved, cellphone records and potential highway camera footage could also be vital in confirming the sequence of events. This evidence is time-sensitive and must be secured quickly.
Accidents like this shouldn’t be reduced to a simple “pile-up.” Getting to the truth means examining every possible factor, not just relying on surface-level reports.
Takeaways:
- Multi-vehicle interstate crashes require careful reconstruction, not assumptions.
- Mechanical failures or defective safety systems may have influenced both cause and severity.
- ECM data, cameras, and cellphone records are crucial for clarity.
