Commentary
When I read about a crash like the one that left Keya Gibson seriously injured, I know that many people will assume it was a simple case of driver error. While side-by-side collisions on the highway often seem straightforward, my experience has shown me that these incidents can be more complex than they first appear. Instead of making assumptions, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure that all possible contributing factors are explored. To that end, there are three critical questions that need to be considered.
First, did the authorities conduct a thorough investigation? When two vehicles collide while traveling in the same direction, determining how and why they came into contact is crucial. Did investigators collect statements from both drivers and any witnesses? Did they examine physical evidence such as tire marks or vehicle damage to reconstruct the sequence of events? Were any factors like distracted driving, impairment, or sudden lane changes considered? The depth of the investigation will determine whether all possible explanations are explored or if key details are overlooked.
Second, has anyone looked into whether a vehicle defect contributed to the crash? A sudden lane departure could be the result of a driver’s actions, but mechanical failures—such as problems with steering, braking, or lane-keeping assistance systems—should not be ruled out. Additionally, if one of the vehicles experienced a tire failure or other mechanical issue that caused an unintentional movement, that would be important to understand. Unfortunately, these issues are rarely investigated unless someone specifically requests a forensic vehicle inspection. If the vehicle is quickly repaired or scrapped, any evidence of a defect may be lost before it can be analyzed.
Lastly, have investigators gathered all available electronic data? Many modern vehicles are equipped with event data recorders (EDRs), which capture key details such as speed, braking, and steering input before a crash. This data could help determine whether the driver attempted to avoid the collision or if the vehicle responded unexpectedly. Additionally, surveillance footage from nearby businesses, traffic cameras, or dashcams from passing vehicles may provide valuable context about how the crash unfolded. If this evidence isn’t secured quickly, it may no longer be available, making it much harder to determine the true cause of the accident.
At the end of the day, answering these questions could be essential to understanding what really happened. A full and fair investigation is necessary to ensure that all contributing factors are considered. A complete review of all possible causes—including the quality of the police investigation, potential vehicle defects, and electronic data—is the least that can be done to ensure that those affected by the crash receive the answers they deserve.
