Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
One of the main concerns I hear from folks involved in single-vehicle wrecks is they want to be sure their side of the story is told fairly. That's completely reasonable, and it's actually very prudent. I've seen a lot of accidents like this where authorities were more concerned with finding out what the driver did wrong than simply looking at the evidence.
This sort of approach may result in crucial details to slipping through the cracks. Ultimately, it sometimes takes thorough independent investigations to keep the facts straight. If they can focus on the evidence and show that authorities covered all their bases, that alone can be reassuring for victims and families. But for those times when authorities fall short and miss crucial information, an independent investigation can bring that information to light and make sure the victim's side of the story is told in full.
