Commentary
Many people expect police investigations to answer all their questions. Particularly in suspected drunk driving crashes, that doesn’t always happen. One of the most important, but often overlooked, questions is where the alcohol came from in the first place.
Authorities believe the driver in this case had been drinking before the crash, and he’s now facing serious charges. But that’s only part of the story. When someone is drinking to the point that a deadly rollover crash occurs, it’s worth asking whether a bar or similar establishment contributed to the situation by serving that person too much.
Texas dram shop laws make it illegal for alcohol providers to serve patrons who are obviously intoxicated. If they break that law and someone gets hurt or killed as a result, they can be held legally responsible. That’s not just about punishment: It’s about accountability and preventing the next crash.
In cases like this, identifying where the alcohol came from is a key part of getting the full truth. From what we know so far, it’s reasonable to ask whether an alcohol provider played a role, and whether anyone took the time to find out.
Answering that question isn’t just important for the victim’s loved ones. It’s how we make sure the same thing doesn’t happen to someone else’s family.
