Commentary by Michael Grossman
As open-and-shut as these preliminary details seem, it's always important to be thorough and let the evidence do the talking. I've seen many situations where people thought their situation was straight-forward enough that all they needed was the police reports to resolve things. Weeks or months down the line, though, it turned out the police reports were too sparse to truly get them the resolution they needed.
That's why it's important all car accidents are taken seriously and get thorough attention from investigators. If authorities can show they've dug into all details and left no stone unturned, that's good. But a lot of the time, that kind of thorough investigation means bringing in independent accident reconstructionists who have more experience handling even the most complex kinds of crashes. The more evidence victims and families have at their disposal, the better their outcomes are likely to be.
