Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When several vehicles collide at an intersection, it’s natural to expect a clear picture of what happened. But that level of clarity depends heavily on the quality of the investigation—and not all agencies are equipped for that.
Did investigators have the time, training, and resources to properly examine what happened?
Crashes involving five or more vehicles can be chaotic, especially at busy intersections. Without detailed scene mapping, interviews, and physical evidence collection, key details might get lost in the confusion. If authorities were stretched thin or lacked the right tools, the conclusions drawn could be incomplete.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle malfunction played a role?
With this many vehicles involved, even one mechanical failure—brake loss, steering issue, or stuck throttle—could trigger a chain reaction. Unless each vehicle was inspected, there’s no way to know if something under the hood contributed to the crash.
Was any crash-related data retrieved from the vehicles involved?
Several of the cars in this wreck likely had onboard systems capable of storing crash data. That information—speed, braking, steering input—can cut through the guesswork and show exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the collision. But that data won’t stick around forever.
When the injuries are serious and the chain of events is unclear, these kinds of questions matter. They help ensure that what gets reported reflects what actually happened.
Takeaways:
- Multi-vehicle crashes need strong investigations to untangle the sequence.
- Vehicle issues in just one car can set off a larger wreck.
- Electronic data can clarify each driver’s actions before impact.
