Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Head-on collisions between passenger vehicles and semi-trucks are almost always devastating, but they also tend to raise more questions than answers. In this case, authorities have not yet determined why the pickup and the semi-truck ended up on a collision course, but that question is key to understanding what really happened.
One of the first things investigators should determine is which vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and why. Was the pickup driver attempting to pass another vehicle? Did the truck driver drift over the centerline due to distraction or fatigue? Were road conditions, such as ice or poor visibility, a factor? Black box data from the truck, witness statements and any available dashcam footage could help piece together those answers.
The fire that followed is another important issue. While high-impact crashes can sometimes cause fuel leaks and fires, not all fires are unavoidable. In my experience, post-crash fires can sometimes be made worse by fuel tank placement, vehicle design flaws or improper maintenance. Investigators should closely examine what caused the fire and whether anything could have been done to prevent it.
It’s easy to look at a crash like this and assume it was just a tragic accident, but real accountability requires looking beyond the crash scene. A thorough investigation should determine not just what happened, but why, and whether any factors, such as vehicle defects or preventable driver errors, contributed to this loss of life.
