Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When someone gets seriously hurt in a multi-vehicle crash, most folks naturally wonder, “Who caused this?” That’s the right question, but in crashes like this one, the answer usually takes more than a quick glance at the police report.
From what’s been reported, it looks like a chain-reaction rear-end collision involving three vehicles: a Camaro, a Ford Flex and a Chevy Colorado. What we don’t yet know, and what matters most, is how that chain reaction started. Did the lead vehicle stop suddenly? Was the Camaro following too closely? Was the driver distracted? Until those questions get answered, there’s no way to know who bears legal responsibility.
Now, since the injured person was a passenger in the Camaro, that adds another layer. Passengers aren’t usually at fault in these crashes, but they often have the most to lose. When I’ve handled cases like this in the past, it’s been essential to determine exactly which driver triggered the pileup, because that’s who ultimately answers for the harm done.
Getting those answers requires digging deeper than the initial report. Investigators will need to pull cell phone records to see if anyone was texting or on a call. Vehicle data — especially from the Camaro, if it’s equipped with a modern black box — can show speed, braking and steering just before impact. Dash cam footage, if available, could clarify what each driver saw and how they reacted.
Until that evidence is gathered and reviewed, anyone guessing who’s at fault is just speculating. But the key thing to understand is this: even when multiple cars are involved, the law still demands a clear look at how each driver contributed. Responsibility isn’t shared just because several vehicles collided; it’s assigned based on actions, not outcomes.
Key Takeaways:
- It’s not yet clear what triggered the chain-reaction crash; more investigation is needed.
- The key question is whether one driver acted carelessly, such as by following too closely or being distracted.
- Passengers injured in multi-car crashes often rely on evidence to pinpoint fault, since they’re not in control of the vehicle.
- Important evidence includes cell phone records, vehicle black box data and dash cam footage.
- Legal responsibility depends on driver behavior, not just the fact that a crash occurred.
