Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Evening collisions on busy farm-to-market roads can be difficult to unpack without clear follow-up. With several people injured and limited information available, the key question is whether anyone took the necessary steps to understand what led up to this crash.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
In a multi-vehicle collision involving multiple injuries, the scene deserves a close look. Did officers document vehicle positions, determine how each vehicle entered the intersection, and review any signs of evasive action? These steps are critical for understanding impact points and timing. Whether or not they were taken often depends on the resources and training available to those who responded.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
When two vehicles collide, it’s worth considering whether a failure inside one of them contributed—especially if one driver didn’t slow down or respond in time. Brake issues, steering problems, or a malfunctioning signal system could all affect how a driver handles the road. These issues require a detailed mechanical review, which doesn’t always happen unless someone specifically requests it.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Electronic data can answer key questions: Were brakes applied? How fast were the vehicles going? Was there any distraction involved? Many modern vehicles, even older ones, can store some of this information. Traffic or home security cameras nearby may also offer useful context, assuming someone thought to check.
When multiple people are injured, it’s not enough to assume what happened. A more complete review can help ensure all contributing factors are recognized.
Takeaways:
- It's unclear whether investigators reconstructed the sequence of events or documented full scene details.
- Vehicle failures might have played a role but won’t be found unless a thorough inspection was done.
- Data from the vehicles or surrounding area could clarify what happened—if anyone retrieved it.
