7 Injured in Multi-Car Accident on I-10 in Gadsden County, FL
Gadsden County, FL — January 12, 2025, seven people were injured in a series of car accidents starting at about 6:40 a.m. on Interstate 10.
Authorities said the first accident occurred when a Toyota sedan lost control on the rain-slicked highway and crashed near mile marker 185. A second vehicle, a Hyundai sedan, couldn't avoid colliding with it.

A semi-truck that had been behind those cars stopped so its driver could render aid to his wife and children in the Hyundai, according to authorities. The 39-year-old man exited his truck before he was forced to jump off the Little River Bridge overpass to avoid an onrushing semi-truck. He fell more than 40 feet, suffering critical injuries.
Another Toyota sedan crashed into the man's stopped truck, then was hit by a Mitsubishi sedan, authorities said. A Honda sedan then crashed into the Mitsubishi.
The Hyundai driver, a 31-year-old woman, and her four daughters suffered minor injuries in the crash, according to authorities. The Toyota driver, a 24-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries as well.
Authorities have not released the names of anyone involved in the Gadsden County accidents.
The crashes are still being investigated.
Commentary
This crash on Interstate 10 raises important questions about why the second semi-truck involved failed to stop in time, resulting in a man being seriously injured as he tried to help his family after earlier collisions.
The key issue for investigators is whether the semi-truck driver had enough time to see the crash scene and react appropriately. Evidence such as the truck’s engine control module (ECM) data, dashcam footage and any witness statements will help determine whether the driver was distracted, speeding, or otherwise inattentive.
Another important question is whether fatigue played a role. Truck drivers are expected to follow strict hours-of-service rules designed to prevent them from becoming too tired to drive safely. Reviewing the driver’s logbooks and recent activity will help determine if they were operating within those limits.
Ultimately, semi-truck drivers have a heightened duty of care to remain alert and prepared to stop for hazards on the road, especially in complex situations like this one. When they fail to do so, the consequences can be severe.
For the injured man and his family, understanding how this crash occurred is essential to ensuring accountability and preventing similar situations in the future. A thorough investigation must provide the answers they need to move forward.
