3 Injured in Multi-vehicle Truck Accident on I.H. 10 in Houston, TX
Houston, TX — May 2, 2024, three people were injured in a multi-vehicle truck accident at approximately 9:45 a.m. along the Katy Freeway, I.H. 10.
According to authorities, a 42-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were traveling in an eastbound Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck on I.H. 10 in the vicinity west of Washington Avenue when the accident took place.

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, an eastbound 18-wheeler with a trailer in tow failed to properly control its speed. This led to a rear-end collision with the pickup truck. This initial collision caused a chain reaction of crashes involving four other vehicles: a Toyota 4Runner, a Chevrolet Blazer, a Nissan Altima, and a Nissan Rogue.
The 35-year-old woman from the Avalanche suffered reportedly severe injuries as a result of the wreck. The 42-year-old man who was with her in the Avalanche and a 66-year-old man who had been an occupant of the 4Runner sustained minor injuries, as well. They were transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. No other injuries have been reported. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When accidents involve large trucks, it’s common to assume the cause is simple driver error. However, in my experience, such incidents usually require thorough investigations to uncover all contributing factors and ensure accountability.
First, we need to understand why the 18-wheeler failed to control its speed. Was the driver distracted, fatigued, or dealing with a mechanical issue? Collecting data from vehicle event recorders, reviewing traffic camera footage, and analyzing witness statements will be crucial in determining the events that led to this crash.
Next, the role of the trucking company should be scrutinized. Was the driver properly trained and adhering to safety protocols? Trucking companies have a responsibility to ensure their drivers are well-prepared for the demands of the road. If the company cut corners on training or pushed the driver to meet unrealistic deadlines, they might share responsibility for the crash. Reviewing the driver’s training records and the company’s safety policies can provide insight into these questions.
Additionally, it's important to examine the truck’s condition. Was it properly maintained? Mechanical failures, such as brake malfunctions or tire issues, can significantly contribute to accidents. Conducting thorough inspections and reviewing maintenance records can reveal if such problems played a role.
Investigations must go beyond the crash scene to uncover the full story. This includes looking into the truck driver’s logs, evaluating their driving history, and consulting with accident reconstruction experts. Only with a comprehensive approach can we ensure that all responsible parties are held accountable.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Whether through obtaining vital evidence or, if necessary, conducting an independent investigation, it’s crucial to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the accident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
