Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a passenger vehicle is struck by a semi-truck on the highway, the key question isn’t just what happened, but why it happened and whether it could have been prevented. My experience handling truck accident cases has taught me that crashes like this often involve issues with visibility, driver awareness, and traffic conditions that need to be fully examined.
One of the most important factors to determine is how the truck came into contact with the car. Did the truck drift into the passenger vehicle’s lane? Was the truck driver attempting a lane change without seeing the car? Large trucks have significant blind spots, and if a driver fails to check mirrors or use proper signaling, collisions like this can occur. Investigators should review dashcam footage, witness statements, and onboard truck data to confirm the sequence of events.
Another key issue is whether the truck driver was distracted, fatigued, or otherwise impaired at the time of the crash. Was the driver on a long-haul shift with little rest? Were they using a mobile device or adjusting controls inside the cab? Many commercial trucks are equipped with in-cab cameras and electronic logging devices (ELDs) that can provide insight into the driver’s actions before the crash.
Beyond driver behavior, road and traffic conditions should also be considered. Early-morning crashes can be influenced by low visibility, fatigue, or sudden slowdowns in traffic flow. If the area has a history of similar collisions, that may suggest a need for additional safety measures, such as improved lighting or signage.
While authorities continue their investigation, it’s important that they look beyond just the immediate impact and consider all contributing factors—driver actions, road conditions, and vehicle positioning—to determine what led to this fatal crash and whether steps could be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
