Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After serious crashes, early reports often leave more unanswered than resolved. When details are thin, it becomes important to pause and ask whether the right steps are being taken behind the scenes to truly understand what happened.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? In a single-vehicle rollover, a basic scene review is rarely enough. A careful investigation should look at tire marks, vehicle movement before the loss of control and how the vehicle behaved as it began to leave its lane. That kind of work can involve detailed measurements, mapping and time spent reviewing the physical evidence, not just clearing the scene. It also matters who handled the investigation. Some officers have advanced crash training, while others may not regularly deal with complex dynamics like rollovers. The depth of the work often depends on that experience.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash? When no other vehicles are involved, mechanical issues deserve close attention. Problems with steering, brakes or throttle systems can cause a sudden loss of control without much warning. These issues are not always visible at a glance, especially after a violent rollover. A proper mechanical inspection of the vehicle can reveal whether something failed before the crash rather than because of it.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected? Modern trucks store valuable information. Data from onboard systems can show speed, braking and steering inputs in the moments leading up to the crash. Phone records, GPS history and nearby camera footage can also help confirm what was happening just before things went wrong. This information can quietly disappear if it isn’t gathered early.
When investigators dig deeper, patterns emerge that a surface review can miss. Asking these questions early helps ensure that important facts are not lost and that conclusions are based on evidence rather than assumptions.
Key takeaways:
- Single-vehicle crashes still require detailed investigation, not quick conclusions.
- Mechanical problems can play a role even when there are no obvious signs.
- Electronic data often provides the clearest picture of what happened before a crash.
