Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When someone gets seriously hurt in a crash, especially at night, people naturally want to understand how it happened and whether it could have been prevented. Those questions matter not just for those directly involved, but for anyone who relies on the roads being safe. In situations like this, it’s worth taking a closer look at how the investigation is being handled and what might still be missing.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? It’s not clear yet how deep investigators went in understanding this collision. A crash between a car and a motorcycle deserves more than surface-level answers, especially at night, when visibility and judgment can be affected. Did officers perform a full scene reconstruction, measure distances or chart the movement of both vehicles before impact? Did they speak with any witnesses or review the drivers’ actions leading up to the crash? The quality of these early steps can shape everything that comes after. In some areas, crash investigators have strong training and experience. In others, they’re stretched thin or don’t have the tools to fully analyze more complex situations like this one.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash? When a motorcycle ends up in a serious crash, people often assume it was rider error, but that’s not always fair. Mechanical issues like sudden brake failure or throttle problems can cause a rider to lose control in an instant. On the flip side, if the Lincoln sedan had any unnoticed issues, like a faulty sensor or braking problem, that could’ve played a role too. Unless both vehicles are carefully inspected, there’s no way to rule out those possibilities. Sometimes these kinds of clues don’t show up on the surface, but they can make all the difference in understanding what really happened.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected? A 2017 Lincoln MKZ likely has some form of onboard data logging, maybe even detailed speed or braking records. If that information is still intact, it could show whether the driver attempted to brake, how fast they were going and whether any safety systems kicked in. The motorcycle might not have the same tech, but phones, helmet cams or nearby traffic cameras could help fill in the blanks. These sources are often the only way to confirm what people were doing in those critical moments before impact. The question is whether anyone has gone after that information yet.
In the aftermath of a serious wreck, surface-level answers don’t go far enough. A real understanding takes more effort, looking beyond what’s obvious and asking harder questions that sometimes get missed in the rush to move on.
Key Takeaways:
- It’s not clear if investigators fully reconstructed how the crash happened.
- Mechanical problems in either vehicle could be a hidden factor.
- Electronic data from the Lincoln or nearby sources could shed new light.
