1 Injured in Alleged Drunk Trucker Accident on I-94 in LaPorte County, IN
LaPorte County IN — October 23, 2025, one person was injured as the result of an alleged drunk trucker accident early Thursday on I-94.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the accident happened on eastbound lanes of the interstate between US 20 and US 421, outside of Michigan City.

Investigators said that a Volvo semi-truck was going along the interstate when a multi-vehicle collision occurred. In that crash, at least one person sustained injuries which were deemed as "serious bodily injury."
After that crash, authorities say they arrested the semi-truck driver for OWI, reporting they received a BAC result of .147 after the crash. The truck driver faces numerous charges. Additional details are unavailable.

These are very serious allegations, and if they're true, there should no doubt be serious consequences. But should those consequences begin and end behind the wheel of the truck?
In my experience, when substance use—both alcohol and drugs—lead to serious commercial vehicle accidents, investigations often reveal there were red flags long before the crash that were never addressed. As such, it's important to know if a truck driver accused of OWI had any kind of history of substance abuse. If so, was that ignored? Did the driver work for a company that never bothered to ensure their drivers were being safe?
This isn't just about looking for people to blame. At the end of the day, if someone gets behind the wheel drunk, they need to be held responsible. But if someone could have caught them before an accident happened, and they failed to do so, they, too, should face any appropriate consequences. If they don't, they'll likely just continue business as usual, and more people are bound to get hurt.
That's why I have to wonder if authorities here are expanding the scope of their investigations to find out who this driver worked for.
