Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
While I don't know any more information about what happened here beyond what's already publicly available, this stretch of road appears to be a divided roadway. Did one of the vehicles suddenly lose control and veer into oncoming lanes? Or, was one of the vehicles on the wrong side of the road? Here's why that distinction matters.
Wrong-way accidents usually involve alcohol. When alcohol causes an accident, it raises questions about where the alcohol came from. I've handled hundreds of alcohol-related accident cases, and wrong-way drivers are almost always unlawfully over-served by a local bar. Those establishments may be responsible for their role in the crash, so it would be vital for investigators to continue efforts beyond the accident scene itself to consider this possibility.
When a vehicle suddenly veers into oncoming lanes, though, there are all kinds of other potential factors to consider. Did a tire blow out? Did the driver have a medical emergency? Was there something in the road? Did the vehicle have an unknown defect? These aren't all things a typical preliminary investigation is likely to catch. That's why it's important efforts are made to put a crash like this in the hands of experienced, dedicated accident reconstructionists. At the end of the day, investigations need to ensure that the families affected by this crash aren't left asking questions at a time when they most deserve answers.
