Pharr, TX — December 24, 2024, Reyes Madrid Mondragon and two others were injured in a car accident shortly before 7:00 a.m. along U.S. Expressway 83.
According to authorities, a DPS trooper was parked behind a Chrysler occupied by 28-year-old Reyes Mondragon on the left shoulder of the roadway on westbound U.S. Expressway when the accident took place.

When multi-vehicle accidents like this occur, particularly those involving law enforcement vehicles and injuries to multiple parties, it’s critical to conduct a thorough investigation to determine how and why the crash happened. Early reports suggest that a pickup truck struck a DPS patrol unit, initiating a chain reaction that caused injuries to three individuals, but the underlying reasons remain unclear. To uncover the full story, three key questions must guide the inquiry.
First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? Multi-vehicle collisions often involve complex dynamics that require detailed analysis of the crash scene. Investigators should examine evidence such as tire marks, debris patterns, and vehicle positions to reconstruct the sequence of events. Witness statements and any available surveillance or dashcam footage could provide additional clarity about how and why the pickup truck veered into the parked DPS vehicle. Determining whether factors such as speed, distraction, or impairment played a role is essential.
Second, has anyone considered whether a vehicle defect might have contributed to the crash? Mechanical failures, such as brake malfunctions or tire blowouts, can cause a vehicle to lose control and strike other vehicles. Additionally, the severity of the impact raises questions about whether the vehicles’ safety systems, such as airbags, functioned as expected. A forensic examination of the pickup truck and the other involved vehicles is essential to rule out or confirm any mechanical issues that could have contributed to the collision or its outcomes.
Finally, has all relevant electronic data been collected? Modern vehicles are often equipped with event data recorders (EDRs) that provide critical information about speed, braking, and steering inputs leading up to a crash. This data can help determine whether the pickup’s movements were consistent with driver input or indicative of a mechanical failure. Additionally, video evidence from the DPS trooper’s dashcam or nearby surveillance cameras could provide a clearer picture of the moments leading up to the collision. Promptly securing this evidence is vital to ensure nothing is lost.
Accidents like this, involving parked vehicles and chain-reaction impacts, require meticulous investigation to identify all contributing factors. By focusing on the thoroughness of the inquiry, exploring the potential for mechanical issues, and collecting all available electronic data, investigators can provide a clearer understanding of what happened. For those injured in this crash, obtaining these answers is a necessary step toward accountability and closure. A comprehensive investigation is the least that can be done to ensure every possible factor is carefully examined.
