Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When it comes to a serious car accident like this, it's important to make sure the incident is getting the attention it deserves. While people might just assume auhtorities can take care of all that, it's sometimes necessary to ask key questions about the investigations early on to make sure there are no shortcomings.
One of the first questions to ask is whether investigators had the time and resources to fully examine the crash scene. In collisions involving multiple vehicles, details like vehicle positions, skid marks, and damage patterns are crucial for understanding the order of events. However, these details may be missed if the investigation is rushed or treated as a low priority.
It’s also worth asking whether a vehicle defect could have contributed. Mechanical issues like brake failure or steering problems can lead to sudden loss of control. Additionally, faulty safety devices such as airbags or seatbelts can result in serious injuries that otherwise could have been avoided. These possibilities can easily go undetected unless someone conducts a thorough inspection early on.
Lastly, was electronic crash data preserved from the vehicles? Information such as speed, braking, and steering input in the moments before impact can help clarify what actually happened. Cell phone records are obviously important, as well, and may slip through the cracks if authrities don't go through the proper channels to secure them. And lastly, there may have been nearby businesses or residence with security cameras that caught the incident on video. That data is time-sensitive and must be secured promptly to be useful.
If authorities can provide clear answers to these questions, then it's likely that they're doing good investigations. But if their answers come up short, that can give folks the opportunity to seek out a second set of eyes so nothing important slips through the cracks.
