Sandy Almanza Killed in Car Accident in El Paso, TX
El Paso, TX — August 4, 2024, Sandy Almanza was killed as the result of a car accident at around 1:20 a.m. along Interstate 10.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the accident happened along westbound lanes of I-10 in the area of Don Haskins Drive.

According to officials, 49-year-old Sandy Almanza was in a Honda Accord going along I-10. In a series of events unclear, authorities say that Almanza's vehicle and a Chevy Malibu collided when they apparently both were merging into the same lane. As a result, Almanza's vehicle ran off-road and crashed into a semi-truck on the shoulder. Almanza was killed as a result.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
While exact factors are unclear right now, authorities mentioned that they're investigating alcohol as a possible factor. If that's true, it could make things a lot more complex than folks may realize. This is specifically due to the importance of finding out where that alcohol came from and if a local alcohol provider is responsible for contributing to the accident.
Put simply, it's illegal in Texas to over-serve someone who is obviously intoxicated. A bar or similar establishment that does so can be on the hook if that person's intoxication then leads them to get themselves or someone else hurt or killed. Not only can they face potential fines, but they can also be subject to potential criminal investigations, license suspensions, and liability for the harm caused by the over-service of alcohol.
Frankly, in my experience with hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers, authorities rarely consider the possibility of a complicit alcohol provider even when they do confirm alcohol as a factor in a crash. Victims and families usually have to have independent investigators look into things to get any kind of information that isn't immediately apparent at the crash scene itself. That's why I have to wonder if proper steps are being taken here to actually get the victim's loved ones the answers they deserve.
