Man Injured in Single-car Accident on U.S. 71 in Austin, TX
Travis County, TX — March 16, 2025, a man was injured due to a single-car accident at approximately 2:15 a.m. along State Highway 71.
According to authorities, three men—a 30-year-old driver and two passengers ages 22 and 25—were traveling in a westbound Subaru Crosstrek on S.H. 71 at the Old Bastrop Highway intersection when the accident took place.

Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, the Crosstrek was involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it apparently overturned. The man who had been behind the wheel reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle overturns in a single-car crash, the first reports often leave the cause vague. But rollovers rarely happen without a specific chain of events, and figuring out that chain requires more than a passing look.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
If the Subaru Crosstrek overturned, investigators should have mapped the vehicle’s movement leading up to the roll. Did they document skid or yaw marks, debris patterns, and the final rest position? Was there evidence of evasive steering or braking? Without that kind of reconstruction, the explanation risks staying stuck at “unknown reasons” instead of uncovering what actually triggered the rollover.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
A vehicle like the Crosstrek relies on stability control systems, suspension components, and tire integrity to stay upright. A sudden failure—a tire blowout, steering lock, or malfunction in its electronic stability system—could have caused the SUV to tip and overturn. Unless a detailed mechanical inspection was done promptly, those signs may already have been lost.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
The Crosstrek likely stored valuable data in its event recorder, including speed, steering angle, brake use, and throttle input just before the crash. Combined with phone records or nearby surveillance cameras, that evidence could distinguish between driver input and an unexpected vehicle response. But if no one secures that data quickly, the opportunity to confirm what really happened can slip away.
Rollovers aren’t random—they result from something specific going wrong. The real question is whether investigators dig deep enough to find out what that “something” was.
Takeaways:
- Rollover crashes require detailed reconstruction to determine how the vehicle lost stability.
- Tire, steering, or stability control failures could have caused the loss of control.
- Event data, phone records, and camera footage are key to clarifying the moments before impact.
