Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a single-car crash is serious enough to bring in a medical helicopter, it’s clear something went terribly wrong. But with few details available, what matters most is whether anyone has started asking the harder questions—because not every crash is just a moment of bad luck.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
Single-vehicle accidents often don’t get the same level of scrutiny as multi-car pileups, but that’s a mistake. Did investigators reconstruct the vehicle’s path or check for signs of sudden evasive action? Was there a close review of the driver’s behavior leading up to the crash—fatigue, distraction, or impairment? Some departments have the tools and training to dig deep, but not all do. And without a methodical review, important evidence can go unnoticed.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
When there’s no other vehicle involved, it’s easy to assume the driver lost control. But critical mechanical issues—like failed brakes, tire blowouts, or electronic steering malfunctions—can take away control in seconds. If no one looked closely at the vehicle’s condition, especially systems that could’ve failed at high speeds, then a major contributing factor may have been overlooked entirely.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Modern vehicles don’t just drive—they record. Event data recorders can show how fast the car was going, whether the brakes were used, and even if steering input changed suddenly. Paired with GPS data or phone records, investigators can get a much clearer view of what really happened. But that kind of data doesn’t stick around forever—it has to be pulled quickly and preserved before it’s lost.
When a crash leaves more questions than answers, the worst thing that can happen is to stop asking. Serious wrecks don’t come out of nowhere, and they don’t explain themselves.
- Single-vehicle crashes deserve as much investigation as multi-car ones.
- Hidden vehicle defects can lead to sudden and severe accidents.
- Electronic records help uncover the real story behind a driver’s final moments.
