Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
One of the key challenges following any serious accident is simply making sure it gets attention from experienced investigators. While many figure that means waiting for authorities to sort through the details, that's not always enough. Authorities have many responsibilities, and even a fatal crash can fall low on their list of priorities. This is why it can be helpful for victims and families to be proactive and consider a few key questions.
Are investigators taking the time and using the right tools and resources to analyze all aspects of the crash? Multi-vehicle accidents can be chaotic, and missing even one key detail could lead to an incomplete or inaccurate conclusion.
Also, are they considering whether any vehicle defects contributed to the crash or made injuries worse? Brake failures, steering malfunctions, or faulty airbags can play a role in both collisions and their severity.
Finally, are authorities working to secure all available electronic evidence? Traffic cameras, dashcams, vehicle data recorders, and even cellphone records could provide crucial insight into what happened.
These questions can help gauge the efforts authorities are making. If they can show they're working to answer these concerns, it's a sign that they're conducting thorough investigations. If they can't address these concerns, they may not be giving the crash the attention it needs. That's when steps can be taken to have a second set of eyes look over the situation.
