Torban Walker Killed, 1 Injured in Alleged DUI Accident in York County, SC
York County, SC — August 12, 2025, Torban Walker was killed and one person was injured following an alleged DUI accident at 7:00 p.m. on Highway 557.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the crash happened at Highway 557 and Bethel Church Road.
According to officials, 66-year-old Torban Walker was in a Chevy stopped at the intersection on eastbound Highway 557. While there, police say that a Ford slammed into the Chevy from behind. This led to a westbound Infiniti crashing into the Chevy. A fourth vehicle then crashed off-road.
Due to the accident, Torban Walker reportedly was killed. One person from the Infiniti was said to have unspecified injuries. No other injuries were reported. Right now, authorities say that the Ford driver is facing charges, including DUI resulting in death.
Commentary
As straight-forward as all of this may seem, the involvement of an alleged impaired driver here could make this a lot more complex than people may realize. For example, if alcohol was the cause of the crash, it may be important to find out where that alcohol came from.
South Carolina has laws similar to Texas which say that negligent alcohol providers who unlawfully over-serve people who have already had too much can be responsible for contributing to a crash resulting from that intoxication. I've handled hundreds of cases against alcohol providers, and the investigations extend far beyond the crash scene itself. Receipts, witness statements, security footage, company training and history—it's a lot more than a typical police crash investigation.
So while there may be a driver here being blamed for behavior that, if true, is clearly unacceptable, making things right for the victims and families involved may be anything but open-and-shut. It make take a lot more thorough independent investigations to bring the full story to light and ensure there's accountability for all parties responsible for the crash.
