Commentary
With non-standard vehicles, there's always a concern about how authorities handled their investigations. Sometimes, they may not give the accident as much attention as they would a typical crash. It can be important, then, to consider a few key questions and gauge the answers authorities come up with.
For example, did authorities employ the time, tools, and training to conduct a thorough investigation? Accidents involving tractors or other non-standard vehicles require careful consideration of visibility, lighting, and roadway conditions. Did investigators document these factors, or did they assume the tractor operator’s presence on the road was the primary issue?
Did they examine whether mechanical defects played a role? A tractor’s lights, brakes, or reflective markings could be relevant in determining how the crash happened. Similarly, did authorities inspect the vehicles that hit the tractor for possible brake failures, steering issues, or other defects that could have affected driver control?
Did they secure all available electronic evidence? The involved vehicles’ Engine Control Modules (ECMs) may contain key data on speed, braking, and steering inputs before impact. Surveillance footage, GPS records, and dashcam video could also provide important context. Were investigators proactive in preserving this information?
If authorities can't come up with clear, convincing answers to these questions, they might not have given the accident the attention it deserves. Otherwise, if they respond accordingly, it's likely a sign they did good investigations. Either way, those involved in a serious accident deserve to know their situation was taken seriously.
