Unborn Baby Killed, Woman Injured in Truck Accident on S.H. 15 near Crete, NE
Saline County, NE — December 10, 2024, an unborn baby was killed and a woman was injured in a truck accident at approximately 1:00 p.m. along S.H. 15.
According to authorities, an SUV was traveling on State Highway 15, slowing to make a turn onto State Highway 41 when the accident took place.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, an 18-wheeler that had been traveling behind the SUV failed to appropriately control its speed. Despite apparently taking evasive actions, the truck still struck the SUV on its left side. Due to the collision, the SUV overturned, coming to a stop resting in a roadside ditch.
A woman in the SUV who was reportedly in her third trimester of pregnancy had become entrapped in the wreckage and had to be extracted by emergency personnel. Once freed from the aftermath, she was flown to an area hospital in order to receive immediate treatment. However, reports state that her unborn baby was unable to survive. The person who had been behind the wheel of the truck is facing multiple charges in connection with this accident. Investigations continue.
Commentary
When reading about a wreck like this one, people often see it as just another case of a driver making a mistake. However, my experience handling commercial vehicle accident cases has shown that the causes of such crashes often go much deeper, involving multiple layers of responsibility that must be uncovered through diligent investigation.
One of the most pressing questions in this incident is why the truck failed to control its speed. Was the driver distracted, speeding, or simply unable to stop in time? Did the driver have a clear line of sight to the SUV as it slowed to turn? These are key factors in understanding why the collision occurred despite apparent evasive efforts. It’s also critical to determine whether the truck’s brakes, tires, or other mechanical systems were functioning correctly.
The condition and operation of the truck itself must be closely examined. Were all safety features, such as brake systems and warning lights, properly maintained and functional? Was the trailer load balanced and secure, or could improper loading have impaired the truck’s stopping ability? Additionally, was the vehicle inspected regularly, and did it meet all state and federal safety standards?
Finally, the trucking company’s role in this crash also demands scrutiny. Companies are required to hire qualified drivers, provide adequate training, and enforce hours-of-service regulations to prevent fatigue. Did this company meet those obligations? Further, are there systemic issues within the company—such as unrealistic delivery schedules or lax oversight—that may have contributed to the driver’s inability to react safely in time?
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
