Commentary
When a semi-truck gets stuck under a bridge, the most obvious question is whether the driver was following posted height restrictions. Bridge strikes are almost always preventable, yet they continue to happen across the country. If this crash was caused by a truck that was too tall for the overpass, that points to a serious failure, either by the driver, the trucking company or both.
One possibility is that the driver simply ignored or missed warning signs about clearance heights. In well-marked areas, that would be inexcusable. But in my experience, some bridge strikes happen because signage is unclear, missing or poorly placed. Investigators should determine whether this particular bridge had proper warnings in place.
Another factor worth considering is whether the driver was using a GPS system designed for commercial trucks. Standard navigation apps don’t account for truck height restrictions, and drivers who rely on them can find themselves on a route they shouldn’t be taking. If that was the case here, then the trucking company may bear some responsibility for failing to ensure its drivers used proper navigation tools.
Then there’s the issue of speed. Some reports suggest another vehicle may have been involved in the crash. If a car cut off the truck or forced it to make a sudden maneuver, that could have contributed to the crash as well. Investigators should review any available dashcam footage or witness statements to determine whether another driver’s actions played a role.
What makes bridge strikes especially dangerous is that they don’t just affect the truck: they can put nearby vehicles at risk, as falling debris, sudden stops or shifting cargo create hazards for other motorists. Given that people were critically injured in this crash, it’s important to understand whether their injuries were caused by the initial collision, secondary impacts or debris from the bridge itself.
At this stage, there’s not enough public information to say exactly what led to this crash. But one thing is certain: Semi-trucks don’t just “accidentally” hit bridges. Something went wrong here, and if the investigation doesn’t dig into all possible cause — driver error, poor signage, GPS misuse or another vehicle’s actions — then the full story won’t be told.
