Commentary
When a crash report states that one vehicle “turned into the path” of another, people tend to assume that means the turning driver was at fault. While that may be true, my experience tells me that the real question isn’t just what happened, but why it happened.
One important factor in a crash like this is visibility. This happened just after midnight, meaning lighting conditions likely played a role. Was the intersection well-lit? Were the truck’s headlights functioning properly? If the van’s driver didn’t see the truck in time, that could explain why they made a turn that put them in harm’s way.
Another key issue is whether the van’s driver misjudged the truck’s speed. It’s a common mistake for drivers to underestimate how fast a semi-truck is approaching. The size of a truck can create an optical illusion, making it seem like it’s moving slower than it actually is. This misjudgment can be deadly, especially on a high-speed road like U.S. 27.
It’s also worth asking whether the truck was moving at a safe speed. If the truck was exceeding the speed limit or traveling too fast for conditions, the van driver may have had less time to complete the turn than they expected. That’s something an investigation should determine by looking at ECM data from the truck, which can show its speed leading up to the crash.
At this point, we don’t have enough information to say exactly why this happened. But one thing is certain: crash investigations shouldn’t stop at the surface level. If authorities don’t look at lighting, visibility, speed, and roadway conditions, they may miss key details that explain what really caused this fatal wreck.
