A medical emergency is often unavoidable, but the involvement of a commercial vehicle can complicate things. Let me explain why.
I had a case a while back where a truck driver had a medical emergency behind the wheel, leading to a serious crash. While the crash was initially written off as unforeseeable, our continued investigations showed otherwise. It turned out the driver had a laundry list of health issues. These issues made it practically inevitable something would eventually go wrong while the driver was behind the wheel, and that's exactly what happened.
Put simply, trucking companies have a responsibility to ensure their drivers can do so safely. If a driver has known medical issues that stand in the way of that, putting them behind the wheel is reckless. It's possible the driver here didn't have any known issues, in which case the company like had no way of preventing this. That said, it's important both that there is clear evidence confirming the direct cause of this crash as well as evidence of whether or not the cause was foreseeable and preventable.
