2 Injured in Truck Accident on S.H. 84 near Fulton, IL
Whiteside County, IL — July 21, 2025, two people were injured due to a multi-vehicle truck accident at approximately 6:15 a.m. along State Highway 84.
According to authorities, a utility truck was traveling northbound on S.H. 84 in the vicinity of Lock Road when the accident took place.

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the truck veered left of center, entering the oncoming lane of traffic. There, it was involved in a collision with two southbound vehicles: a Kia, and a Buick. A Dodge apparently struck some of the debris from the crash, as well.
The two drivers who had been behind the wheels of the Kia and the Buick each sustained injuries of unknown severity as a result of the accident, though they were described as to have been non-life-threatening; they were transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. It does not appear that anyone else involved was hurt.
Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of the victims—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary
When a truck veers into oncoming traffic and hits multiple vehicles, the most pressing question is: Why did it cross the center line in the first place? That kind of movement is rarely accidental. Whether it's the result of distraction, fatigue, a mechanical issue, or a sudden medical event, the answer is key to understanding how this crash could have been prevented—and who may bear responsibility.
In this case, reports indicate the utility truck was the first vehicle to deviate from its lane, which likely makes its movement the triggering event. That places a higher investigative burden on understanding the truck’s condition, the driver’s behavior, and whether the company that owns the vehicle had adequate safety protocols in place.
Was the driver alert and in control? Was the truck properly maintained, particularly the steering and braking systems? Could a tire failure or equipment defect have caused a sudden loss of control? These are the types of questions that need to be answered through black box data, vehicle inspection records, and possibly toxicology results, depending on what initial findings show.
Crossing into oncoming traffic creates a situation where those in the opposite lane have little or no time to react. That’s what makes this kind of crash particularly dangerous—and why it’s so important to determine if it was truly unforeseeable or the result of preventable choices.
Key Takeaways:
- The utility truck reportedly crossed the center line, triggering the chain of collisions that followed.
- The cause of that movement—driver error, mechanical failure, or something else—will be central to determining responsibility.
- Critical evidence includes black box data, vehicle maintenance records, and driver condition at the time of the crash.
- Cross-center-line crashes give other drivers little chance to avoid impact, increasing the need for proactive safety measures.
- Accountability depends on a thorough investigation into both the truck’s operation and the company’s oversight practices.
