Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When I hear about a crash like this one on Interstate 40, my first thought is to examine what may have caused the driver to lose control. Single-vehicle accidents like this often involve factors such as road conditions, vehicle mechanics or driver behavior.
One critical question is whether the truck and trailer were properly loaded and secured. Hauling a 30-foot utility trailer can significantly affect a vehicle’s handling, particularly if the weight is unevenly distributed or improperly balanced. Investigators should determine whether the trailer was overloaded or if any load-shifting occurred during travel, which might have contributed to the vehicle veering off the road.
The road conditions along Interstate 40 at the time of the crash also deserve attention. Was the surface wet, icy or otherwise hazardous? Additionally, rural stretches of highway like this often have narrow shoulders, steep embankments or limited visibility, all of which could increase the severity of an off-road incident. If the road’s design played a role, authorities might consider whether infrastructure improvements are needed in similar areas.
The driver’s actions are another key focus. Was the driver distracted, fatigued or possibly reacting to a sudden obstacle on the road? These possibilities could be clarified by examining skid marks, witness accounts or onboard data from the vehicle. Investigators should also consider whether a medical emergency or impairment could have caused the driver to lose control.
Finally, the mechanical condition of the truck and trailer must be evaluated. Were the brakes, tires and hitch mechanism in proper working order? Mechanical issues are a known contributor to crashes involving vehicles towing trailers, particularly when they affect stability or braking performance.
This crash illustrates the unique challenges of towing large trailers on highways. A thorough investigation into the driver’s actions, the condition of the vehicle and trailer and the road environment will be essential to understanding what happened and identifying measures to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.
