Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When I read about a head-on collision between a dump truck and an SUV, my first thought is that something went very wrong long before impact. Head-on crashes are among the most severe types of accidents, and the key question here is why these two vehicles ended up in the same lane at the same time.
There are several possibilities that investigators should consider. Did one of the drivers drift out of their lane due to distraction or fatigue? Did a mechanical failure, like a blown tire or brake issue, force one vehicle into oncoming traffic? Were road conditions — such as ice, standing water or poor visibility — a factor? Without answers to these questions, any assumptions about fault would be premature.
The fact that a dump truck was involved also raises additional concerns. These trucks carry heavy loads that affect braking distance, stability and maneuverability. If the dump truck driver tried to stop or swerve but couldn't avoid the collision, investigators should look at whether the truck was overloaded or if there were maintenance issues that affected its handling.
One of the best ways to determine what happened is to look at available evidence. Dashcam footage, black box data and eyewitness accounts can provide crucial details about vehicle speed, lane position and driver actions leading up to the crash. A proper investigation should go beyond the crash scene to examine these factors.
At this point, we don’t know enough to say exactly what went wrong. But if authorities don’t dig deeper into both drivers’ actions and the condition of the vehicles involved, they risk missing the real cause of this crash.
