Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Something to keep in mind is that even crashes like this can involve very complex factors authorities may not be able to look into on their own. People tend to assume authorities have crack CSI teams digging into these accidents. The reality is single-vehicle wrecks are often seen as a low priority, and that often leads to mishandled investigations.
For example, I handled a case a while back where authorities missed a major defect that contributed to the accident. The victim's seatbelt was defective, causing them to be thrown from their seat despite safely using their seatbelt. Authorities found the victim out of their seat and just assumed they hadn't been wearing their seatbelt. The victim wasn't in a position to tell their side of the story, so had there not been more thorough investigations, authorities could have blamed someone for something they couldn't control.
While I'm not necessarily saying anything like that happened here, it's an example of why thorough accident reconstructions are always important. I don't see anything right now that would make this incident an exception to that.
