William Hardrick Killed in Truck-Related Accident on I-65 in Limestone County, AL
UPDATE (May 8, 2025): New statements identified the victim killed in the series of accidents as William Hardrick. Authorities also say they've charged the truck driver for murder in connection with William Hardrick's death.
Limestone County, AL — May 6, 2025, at least one person was killed in a series of accidents involving a semi-truck at around 7:00 p.m. along Interstate 65.
According to initial details from the Morgan County Sheriff's Department, the series of events happened on a stretch of southbound I-65 between Athens and the Tennessee River bridge.

Current statements say there was an 18-wheeler going southbound on I-65 behaving "recklessly." In doing so, authorities say there was a series of accidents related to that 18-wheeler. One person died in an accident outside of Athens, according to reports. It's unclear right now if the 18-wheeler was directly involved in that accident.
Authorities say the truck driver eventually stopped after the truck caught fire. Potential charges are unclear at this time as investigations continue.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
As more details come to light here, the allegations are more than concerning. Obviously, authorities will continue to examine the actions this truck driver made during these incidents to ensure there are consequences matching the severity of whatever mistakes led to the accident. However, there's another crucial question to consider: Was all of this foreseeable?
Let's say the current allegations against this truck driver are true. If that driver worked for an employer, were there not signs something like this might occur? Was there any kind of history of reckless behavior? Has this driver been involved in accidents before? People sometimes get tunnel vision and focus solely on a driver's behavior. But when a commercial vehicle is involved, it's important to know if there steps their employer could have taken to prevent an incident like this. If nothing else, it's something that would be prudent to rule out.
