13-year-old Killed in Fireworks Accident in Naytahmaush, MN
Mahnomen County, MN — July 4, 2025, a 13-year-old kid was killed due to a fireworks accident that happened around 11:14 p.m. off New Circle Drive.
Preliminary statements from the sheriff's office say the incident happened south of the intersection of Highway 200 and County Road 4.

Right now, details are still preliminary. Reports suggest a 13-year-old boy was holding a tube firework at the time. It was lit, following which the 13-year-old was struck by the firework or part of the tubing. Some details suggest the firework may have come out of the wrong end.
The 13-year-old was reportedly unresponsive when EMS arrived, and the victim was eventually pronounced deceased. No other injuries were reported. Investigations are ongoing.
Commentary
Every year, incidents like this catch a lot of attention, and a lot of people immediately start jumping to conclusions. The possibility this firework behaved unusually, if nothing else, highlights the need for thorough investigations into all factors surrounding the accident. Jumping to conclusions won't do any good, least of all for a grieving family.
