Kairo De La Torre Killed in Car Accident in Tom Green County, TX
Tom Green County, TX — May 12, 2024, Kairo De La Torre was killed as the result of a car accident at around 2:30 a.m. along Grape Creek Road.
Initial statements from authorities say that the incident happened in the Grape Creek area along Grape Creek Road just off the U.S. Highway 87 intersection, northwest of San Angelo.

According to officials, 22-year-old Kairo De La Torre was a passenger riding on an ATV 4-wheeler being driven southbound on Grape Creek Road, reportedly without headlights. From the northbound lane, a Cadillac made a left turn toward the Allsup's, and the vehicles collided. De La Torre was killed as a result. The driver of the 4-wheeler reportedly had moderate injuries.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
The 4-wheeler driver is accused of being over three times the legal blood-alcohol content limit after the accident. To be clear, I don't bring this up to speak ill of anyone. My concern is that with such serious accusations, it might surprise people to learn authorities are not always thorough in getting answers beyond punishing the alleged drunk driver. Important as that is, there's often an accomplice who also can be held accountable: an alcohol provider.
Simply put, if evidence shows a bar or some similar establishment illegally over-served someone who was obviously intoxicated, and that leads to people getting hurt, the alcohol provider is responsible for their role in those events. But despite handling hundreds of cases against those sorts of alcohol providers, I recall few times where authorities investigated an alcohol provider without us bringing things to their attention. More often than not, they simply charged the drunk driver and moved on.
At the end of the day, if someone loses their life, their loved ones want to see accountability for that. If more than one party is responsible for the fatal accident, all parties should face appropriate consequences. So if investigations show authorities here are only getting part of the larger story, it would be worth steps to find out what they may be overlooking.
