As straight-forward as these initial claims may seem, it's important there is as much evidence as possible telling the story. Whether it's seeing accountability for reckless actions or simply getting answers for the victim's loved ones, a cursory glance at the scene isn't likely to cover everything. That typically requires investigations into multiple complex factors.
Have authorities pulled cellphone records? Did they test for drugs and alcohol? Did any of the vehicles, including the 18-wheeler, have a camera? Have authorities laser-mapped the scene and analyzed debris patterns? Does this stretch of road see a lot of incidents like this one?
Likely or not, a proper investigation has to consider things from all angles. Generally speaking, families are more likely to get the resolution they deserve when they have as much evidence telling the victim's side of the story as possible. Maybe authorities have been working hard to do that, but it's not unusual for crashes like this to fare better in the hands of independent accident reconstructionists.
