Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
In the early morning hours, when visibility is low and fatigue can blur judgment, single-vehicle crashes tend to raise more questions than they answer. It's easy to assume that the cause lies with the driver alone, but these incidents often involve unseen variables that demand closer scrutiny. When someone is seriously hurt, the process of understanding how and why it happened shouldn't stop at the surface.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? At 3:40 a.m., conditions are far from ideal for quickly piecing together what happened, especially if the scene is cleared before daylight. The question is whether investigators took the time to conduct a full-scale reconstruction: measuring skid marks, documenting vehicle angles and mapping out the path the truck took before leaving the roadway. That level of detail matters when trying to determine whether something more than driver error was involved. The training and experience of the officers on scene also play a role; without advanced reconstruction skills, crucial elements of a crash like this can be easily missed.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash? A 2020 GMC Sierra isn’t an old truck, but that doesn’t make it immune to problems. Failures in steering systems, electronic stability controls or even a stuck throttle could cause a vehicle to veer off course. especially if it happens without warning. If the truck was towed straight to a salvage yard or released without a detailed inspection, that opportunity to catch a hidden malfunction may already be gone. The absence of obvious clues doesn’t mean the mechanical side of things should be ignored.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected? Modern vehicles can hold a wealth of information: whether the brakes were hit, how fast the truck was going or if there were steering corrections before the crash. Paired with phone records or even nearby traffic cameras, that data can help form a clearer picture. But time is a factor. If no one acted quickly to pull the truck’s black box or check digital breadcrumbs, that evidence might now be lost or overwritten.
As much as people want answers after a serious crash, the truth doesn’t always surface on its own. It has to be pursued, piece by piece, before any real conclusions can be drawn.
Key Takeaways:
- A proper crash investigation takes more than a quick once-over, especially in low-light conditions.
- Vehicle malfunctions can cause sudden loss of control, even in newer models.
- Electronic data from the vehicle and nearby sources often holds the key to understanding what really happened.
