Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After any car accident, it's important to ensure that all the facts are straight. People often have concerns about how to know if their situation is being handled properly so that happens. Generally speaking, I've found three key questions can help in this regard.
The first question to ask is whether investigators had the proper time and equipment to conduct a thorough investigation. Crashes involving multiple vehicles require careful documentation of impact points, vehicle positions, and roadway evidence. If those details weren’t fully recorded—either due to limited resources or time constraints—important parts of the story may be missing.
Another key consideration is whether a vehicle defect could have contributed. Issues like steering or brake failure, or problems with safety systems like seatbelts and airbags, can influence both the cause and severity of a crash. These kinds of defects aren’t always obvious and typically require a detailed inspection, which may not happen unless someone asks for it early on.
Finally, was any crash-related electronic data preserved? Most vehicles today store information about speed, braking, and steering input prior to impact. Combined with phone records or nearby surveillance footage, that data can be vital to understanding how the crash unfolded—but it must be collected quickly before it’s lost.
With these questions, people can determine if they're satisfied with the responses authorities are giving them. If so, it's likely a sign authorities were thorough in their investigations. If not, it may be a sign that there are still details that require further investigations.
