Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle rolls over without another car involved, it’s easy to chalk it up to driver error. But that assumption often cuts short the kind of investigation needed to understand what really led to the crash. Especially in remote or high-speed areas, there’s more than one way a vehicle can lose control.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
Rollovers suggest a sudden shift in balance or direction, which should lead investigators to reconstruct the vehicle’s path and dynamics in detail. That includes looking at tire marks, debris fields, and the sequence of the rolls to figure out how the truck reacted before leaving its path. It’s also important to consider whether the driver was trying to avoid something or whether something went wrong inside the vehicle. In many single-vehicle crashes, the scene is wrapped up quickly without digging into these deeper possibilities, especially if there are no witnesses to contradict assumptions.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
Pickup trucks, particularly when lightly loaded or traveling at higher speeds, can be vulnerable to rollover if stability systems malfunction or steering components fail. Even a single faulty sensor could throw off how the truck responds to a sharp turn or correction. These problems don’t leave obvious signs, and unless someone checks the mechanical and electronic systems, there's no way to know if a failure played a role.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Modern pickups often record key data that can explain what was happening in the seconds before a crash—steering input, throttle use, braking, and vehicle speed. That data can show whether the driver made a sudden move, whether the truck’s systems responded properly, or whether there was no driver input at all. If that information hasn’t been pulled from the truck’s event recorder or backed by GPS or phone records, then important questions are still unanswered.
Rollover crashes can seem straightforward, but the forces at play are anything but simple. Real answers depend on more than what’s visible at the scene—they come from looking at the data, the systems, and every piece of the vehicle’s final moments.
Key Takeaways:
- A full investigation should reconstruct the rollover to understand vehicle motion and driver behavior.
- Pickup trucks may lose control due to unseen mechanical or electronic failures that require expert review.
- Electronic crash data and GPS records are essential to understanding what happened just before the crash.
