Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a T-bone collision happens, it usually means one vehicle entered another’s path at the wrong time—but the real challenge is determining why that happened. That requires more than just noting the point of impact.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
A side-impact collision calls for precise scene documentation—measuring the angle of impact, mapping the positions of both vehicles, and studying debris and skid patterns to understand speed and movement before contact. Investigators should also assess whether either driver braked or swerved in the moments before the collision. The depth of these findings depends on whether the responding team has the tools and training for full reconstruction.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
Even in clear right-of-way scenarios, a brake failure, steering problem, or tire blowout in either vehicle could lead to a driver entering an intersection or crossing another vehicle’s path. A thorough inspection of the Mercury and the Chevy is necessary to rule out any mechanical factors that might have played a role.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Both vehicles may have event data recorders capable of revealing speed, brake use, and steering inputs in the seconds before impact. Traffic cameras, dashcams, or nearby surveillance systems could also provide a visual record of the events leading up to the crash. Securing that evidence early helps ensure it remains intact and reliable.
Understanding a collision like this means putting together the physical scene, the mechanical condition of the vehicles, and the available digital evidence to form a complete picture.
Takeaways:
- Side-impact crashes require careful scene measurements and angle analysis.
- Mechanical inspections can uncover hidden problems that contributed.
- Electronic and camera data can confirm the timing and actions of both drivers.
