Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Single-vehicle accidents may not always get the level of scrutiny they deserve, which can leave important details unexamined. If investigators don’t take the time or have the right tools to conduct a thorough review, key factors could be overlooked.
Did authorities have the resources and experience to fully investigate? A vehicle leaving the roadway could be influenced by road hazards, poor visibility, or an evasive maneuver. Were these factors properly documented, or did investigators assume driver error?
Did they check for possible mechanical failures? Brake malfunctions, steering issues, or other sudden mechanical defects could explain why the vehicle veered off course. Additionally, if seatbelts or airbags failed, injuries may have been worse than they should have been. Was the vehicle inspected before critical evidence was lost?
Did they secure all available electronic evidence? The vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM) may contain key data on speed, braking, and steering inputs before the crash. GPS records, cellphone data, and nearby surveillance footage could also provide valuable insights. Have authorities taken steps to preserve this information?
If these steps weren’t taken, important details may have been missed. A complete and careful investigation is necessary to ensure victims and families get the full story. That's why it's important they trust their instincts if they feel that authorities can't provide satisfying answers to these questions.
