Laredo, TX — May 11, 2025, Gerardo Mendoza sustained fatal injuries due to a single-vehicle car accident at around 11:40 p.m. on San Bernardo Avenue.

According to initial details about the accident, it happened at the intersection of San Bernardo Avenue and Washington Street.

It appears that 34-year-old Gerardo Mendoza was in a vehicle going through the intersection at the time. For reasons which are not confirmed right now, the vehicle ended up crashing. Gerardo Mendoza was taken to a hospital where reports say he died the following morning.

There did not appear to be anyone else involved in the accident. Investigations are ongoing.

Believe it or not, single-vehicle accidents are incredibly challenging. It isn't necessarily that something complex happened, but rather these crashes don't always get the attention they deserve. That's why I get calls all the time from families worried that authorities aren't getting the whole story. This is why it can be helpful to consider a few key questions and gauge the responses authorities have.

The first thing to consider is whether the scene was thoroughly examined. When authorities are short on time or resources, they may not capture all the critical details—things like skid marks, vehicle damage patterns, or environmental conditions. Without that information, any conclusions drawn could be missing important context.

Next, has anyone looked into whether a vehicle defect may have played a role? Mechanical issues—like steering or brake failure—or problems with safety systems such as airbags or seatbelts can either cause a crash or make injuries worse. These issues are easy to overlook unless a proper inspection is done before the vehicle is altered or scrapped.

Finally, was all electronic data preserved? Vehicles today often record key information in the moments before a crash—speed, braking, and steering input. Along with possible GPS or phone data, and nearby surveillance footage, this kind of evidence can provide valuable insight—if someone acts quickly enough to retrieve it.
