Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
It's sometimes surprising to people to hear that a complete investigation is a lot more than just finding out if someone did something wrong. That's part of the process, but other factors may have played a role in the crash. For example, road conditions, visibility, or unusual traffic patterns can contribute to a crash. So can vehicle defects, such as faulty airbags, brakes, or seatbelts. Even if there may be a more immediately obvious factor to consider, it might not be the only one. Focusing too narrowly on one potential factor can result in investigators missing the forest for the trees.
That's why it's important to consider how investigations into a crash like this are being handled. That's especially true with stories like this where the chaos and life-saving efforts made after the crash might have taken priority over doing a more detailed crash reconstruction. That's why it's important for anyone affected by a serious crash to consider what questions and concerns they have and whether or not they think they're getting the answers they deserve. If not, it may be that a more thorough secondary investigation will be necessary for getting those answers.
