Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
A multi-vehicle crash like this is bound to create a chaotic accident scene for investigators. I have to wonder if authorities have the tools, time, and experienced personnel to handle that level of challenge.
Just to be clear, that's not a slight at any specific departments. I've handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases across a more than 30 year career. The fact of the matter is some departments just lack the resources for a deadly commercial truck wreck. That's when things like cellphone records, road analysis, vehicle inspections, and other complex factors slip through the cracks.
In these situations, then, it's sometimes necessary to bring in independent accident reconstructionists to ensure nothing important slips through the cracks. Sometimes, they just confirm what police already found. That alone can be a world of weight off the shoulders of a grieving family. But if authorities did happen to miss something, an independent investigations can help bring that information to light.
