Officer, Prisoner Injured in Transport Van Accident on I-10 in Jackson County, MS
Jackson County, MS — February 18, 2026, an officer and a prisoner were killed and others were injured due to a transport van accident at 9:30 a.m. on I-10.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the accident happened at Washington Avenue in the Ocean Springs area.
It appears that a prisoner transport van was traveling westbound along the interstate at the time. Somehow, the van and a utility truck collided, and the van ended up crashing off the side of the road. Due to this, one of the officers in the vehicle was killed. One of the prisoners died, as well.
Reports say three others involved in the crash were injured. Right now, additional details are unavailable pending investigations.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
With a serious crash like this, it's important that investigators look into all possibilities regardless of how unlikely they may seem. I see too many situations where authorities are so busy clearing the scene and helping the victims that their crash investigations are treated as a low priority. That can lead to rushed, shallow investigations.
This is where independent investigators can be a vital ally for victims and families. At the end of the day, those affected by a crash need to know they're getting the full story. That's especially true for families who have lost a loved one. Once all the evidence is clear, then there can be an informed decision about what comes next for those involved. Hopefully this crash will be in the hands of experienced professionals who will leave no stone left unturned.
