Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Something to consider following any serious truck wreck is that the scene can be quite chaotic and challenging to secure. That's why I caution folks when their reaction is to simply wait for authorities to get answers. It's not that authorities can never do a good job with their investigations. Rather, it's not easy to know if the investigations were bad until it's too late.
That's why it can be so helpful to follow up with authorities as soon as possible to make sure they're covering all sides of the story. Have they laser-mapped the scene? Did they analyze debris patterns and impact vectors? Did they pull electronic data from the vehicles? Have they pulled cellphone records? Did they follow up with the victim who was rushed to the hospital? Have they inspected the vehicles for defects—either that contributed to the crash or the victim's injuries (e.g. seatbelt or airbag failure)?
If authorities can show they're asking the right questions and dedicating the time and tools necessary to getting answers, then that can reassure victims and families their situation is being handled properly. But if the answers come up short and authorities can't adequately address the family's concerns, that can be an opportunity to have more thorough independent investigators look into the crash.
