Ina, IL — January 16, 2025, two people were killed in a truck accident at about 10 a.m. on southbound Interstate 57 in Jefferson County.
Authorities said a semi-truck crashed into a Hyundai Palisade when traffic slowed near the Ina exit. That forced the SUV to collide with the semi-truck in front of it, then the truck hit a third semi-truck.

The Hyundai driver died at the scene of the crash, while the passenger died after being flown to a St. Louis hospital, according to authorities. Their names have not been made public at this time.
None of the truck drivers were injured in the crash, but authorities said the driver of the truck that rear-ended SUV was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
No other details about the crash have been released at this time. The accident is still under investigation.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
This tragic chain-reaction crash on Interstate 57 highlights the devastating consequences that can occur when a semi-truck fails to account for slowing traffic. With two lives lost, the focus must be on understanding why the truck driver was unable to stop in time and what could be done to prevent similar incidents.
The key issue is the actions of the truck driver who rear-ended the Hyundai. The citation for failing to reduce speed suggests that authorities believe the driver was either distracted, following too closely or traveling too fast to respond to the traffic conditions. Investigators will likely examine evidence such as skid marks, the truck’s engine control module (ECM) data and any available dashcam footage to determine the truck’s speed and braking activity leading up to the crash.
Another factor to consider is the visibility and signage near the Ina exit. Was traffic congestion expected or marked with advanced warnings, giving drivers sufficient time to slow down? Highways with frequent exits can experience sudden traffic slowdowns, especially during peak hours, and ensuring drivers have clear visibility of the road ahead is critical.
The design of the crash area itself is also worth examining. Were the lanes properly marked, and was there adequate space for vehicles to maneuver in the event of a sudden stop? Narrow shoulders or poor sightlines can exacerbate the risks of rear-end collisions, particularly when large trucks are involved.
The Hyundai’s position between two semi-trucks contributed significantly to the severity of the crash. Passenger vehicles are at a significant disadvantage in collisions with large trucks, and the damage caused by being caught between two is particularly devastating. This underscores the importance of maintaining safe following distances for all drivers, but especially for those operating heavy commercial vehicles.
For the families of the victims, finding answers about what caused this crash is essential. A thorough investigation will help clarify the roles of driver behavior, road conditions and vehicle factors in this incident.
